{"id":31405,"date":"2022-09-29T10:24:11","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T10:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themint.kinsta.cloud\/?p=31405"},"modified":"2024-09-02T15:46:49","modified_gmt":"2024-09-02T14:46:49","slug":"how-to-clean-up-in-a-trickle-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themintmagazine.com\/how-to-clean-up-in-a-trickle-down\/","title":{"rendered":"How to clean up in a trickle down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Professor Bastion<\/strong> gets Trussed up as she witnesses opportunities in Kiev.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I heard the new PM\u2019s words, \u201cI am willing to be unpopular\u201d, I felt goosebumps.\u00a0 At last an economist in charge willing to do the right thing \u2013 capital R, capital T \u2013\u00a0come what may.\u00a0 Not since I lunched with Thatcher and Pinochet have I felt such a tingle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now Truss and her man, Kwarteng, may not be getting it all right \u2013 I would be happier with less debt \u2013 but that is not the point.\u00a0 They are ready to do whatever it takes. They even seem to answer questions with straight answers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem with more recent governments is that they have sought approval from the masses.\u00a0 Liz Truss has realised that she need not pander to the people.\u00a0 Democracy is so often a barrier to following the true path to economic growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My former star pupil and finance wizard, Crispin McDonal, rang me immediately after the mini-budget. He was over the moon. He trained Kwarteng back in the day and knows he is basically up for the job.\u00a0 He had given \u201cKwasi spelt Quasi\u201d as he rather unkindly called him, a pep talk last week to keep him on track.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Crispin has invited me to lunch next week to Valenski\u2019s to try deconstructed chicken Kiev so we can work out the next moves for Kwarteng.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crispin knew that the budget would be badly received by the City idiots and placed his money accordingly, making a killing as the pound hit rock bottom.\u00a0 He has never given that ignorant herd the time of day or he wouldn\u2019t have been one of the most successful hedge fund managers in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are truly exciting days.\u00a0 Crispin has invited me to lunch next week to Valenski\u2019s to try deconstructed chicken Kiev so we can work out the next moves for Kwarteng.\u00a0 This restaurant in Mayfair is a new venture of his serving traditional Ukrainian food with a twist.\u00a0 It is cooked and served by war refugees, who he and his fellow private equity investors were putting up in their spare houses.\u00a0 Of course, it is now the Number One restaurant in London for anyone with serious money.\u00a0 As Crispin has often said, there is no situation where there isn\u2019t a commercial angle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has promised <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/themintmagazine.com\/verity-and-so-to-the-cleaners-an-invitation-to-lunch-all-gets-a-bit-messy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no exploding puddings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this time &#8211; we did have a giggle together over that memory.\u00a0 He is such a charming companion and I do feel my days of influence are not over.\u00a0 Maybe we really are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/themintmagazine.com\/turning-back-the-clock\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">returning to the hay days of the 70s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*********<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am only now returning to complete this exciting missive after a major interruption. As my mind was drifting back to those halcyon days, screaming came from the bathroom.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was Martina, our cleaner.\u00a0 My demented neighbour upstairs, Joan, who has previously <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/themintmagazine.com\/carbon-upset\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assaulted me with her washing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, had left her bath running. As a result, the whole bath had fallen through our ceiling onto Martina together with tonnes of water.\u00a0 She was in a very bad way trapped under the debris and utterly denched.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What followed was harrowing.\u00a0 Thomas, my trusty husband, was first calling 999 for an ambulance, but after two hours there was still no sign of one and Martina\u2019s groans had become weak sighs despite our efforts to keep her topped up with sweet tea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that point, I sent Thomas to find his friend, Robina Fitzwell, our resident spiritualist, and ask her to get her nephew, our local MP, to pull some strings.\u00a0 Even then it was another hour until a harassed ambulance crew arrived to take her to our local hospital.\u00a0 They are such indomitable people, but they didn\u2019t look happy today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor Martina is going to be off work for some time and she has told Thomas that her agency is not going to keep her on.\u00a0 I am sure though Truss\u2019s drive for economic growth with a more flexible labour market will mean she finds a new job very soon.\u00a0 Trickle down to counter the effects of a flood no less Ha!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Update: Very disappointed as U turns mount up!
